The OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G 120GB SATA 3 SSD

The OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G 120GB SATA 3 SSD

An SSD arrived earlier today that I thought all might like to read about.  A quick change of plans to the negative of a few and here we are taking pictures and benchmarking the new OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G 120GB SSD.  Having just completed testing, OWC gets a big thumbs up for being only the second manufacturer to release an SSD with SandForces new SF-2000 series SATA 3 processor as well as ensuring the '6G' is of the quality that we have come to appreciate.

The OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD is a SATA 3 solid state drive and available in capacities of 120, 240 and 480GB.  Initial pricing is expected to be in the area of $319.99 and $579.99 for the 120 and 240GB versions with the 480GB demanding a premium of $1799.  Performance for the 6G is equal for all capacities at 506MB/s read and 464MB/s write with 60,000 IOPS and .1ms disk access.

Kingston HyperX Max 3.0 External USB 3 128GB SSD

Kingston HyperX Max 3.0 External USB 3 128GB SSD

With USB 3.0 now becoming standard in many new laptops and computers alike, we thought it might be an ideal time to review an external USB  3 solid state drive and were fortunate to be offered the opportunity by Kingston Technology.

Seagate GoFlex 1TB External Drive for Mac

Seagate GoFlex 1TB External Drive for Mac

We have looked at quite of few of Seagate's GoFlex drives and media products in the last year or so. From portable drives to desktop drives, and from networking systems to media players, each one has proven to be a very good performer. Their small footprint and interchangeable cabling system make them useful to just about everyone.

Crucial M4 / Micron C400 256GB SSD

Crucial M4 / Micron C400 256GB SSD

The Crucial m4 SSD will be available in several capacities from 64 GB to 512 GB and all should be available this month although pricing is MIA at the moment. Our 256 GB drive rated for up to 415 MB/s reads and 260 MB/s writes which is a little behind that of the Intel 510 Series drive which uses the same Marvell controller - although the m4 utilizes eight channels while the Intel uses ten. Obviously, the firmware employed by each differs and the benchmarks will bear out how they perform in comparison...

Crucial M4 256GB SATA 3 SSD

Crucial M4 256GB SATA 3 SSD

The best part of reviewing SSDs is the ever changing atmosphere and pace at which things progress. As a reviewer, one never knows what to expect until a SSD is in our hands and that certainly is the case with the Crucial M4 SATA 3 solid state drive. We were a bit surprised to learn that Crucials new consumer version SSD has now taken the branding of M4 vice following that of the C300 line of their former release.

For those unaware, Micron is Crucials parent company and will be retaining the C400 branding for their enterprise line of SSDs.  Admittedly, we couldn't resist benchmarking the M4 as quickly as it was received and we soon learned that the name change wasn't the only surprise we were in for.

LSI MegaRAID SAS/SATA 9265-8i 6Gb/s PCIe RAID

LSI MegaRAID SAS/SATA 9265-8i 6Gb/s PCIe RAID

Following our last reviews of the Areca 1880 RAID Card and LSI 9260-81 MegaRAID Card, we are going to take an indepth look at LSIs new release, the LSI 9265-8i MegaRAID Card, an eight-port PCI Express SATA+SAS RAID Controller that is configured for 6Gb/s devices.

With the speed and power of SSDs reinventing mainstream storage, RAID card manufacturers are challenged to deliver a product that can handle the massive throughput and high random reads of these solid state drives. Manufacturers then raise the bar by combining these SSDs into ultra speedy RAID arrays , the end result of which is shown in the LSI 9265-8i as we have today.

Seagate GoFlex Slim 320GB USB 3.0 Hard Drive

Seagate GoFlex Slim 320GB USB 3.0 Hard Drive

The Seagate GoFlex Slim 320GB portable drive caught us a little off guard when it arrived. We weren't sure what to expect, but in the end we found ourselves pleasantly surprised to find a portable drive that was fast, lightweight, small and looked good. Usually, you can't find a way to blend all those features together without making sacrifices along the way, but that doesn't appear to be the situation we have here today. In order to take full advantage of this drive you really need to have a USB 3.0 interface! With CrystalDiskMark we saw the GoFlex Slim 320GB drive peak at ~120MB/s read and ~118MB/s write, so if you've been using a USB 2.0 drive and are stuck at ~31MB/s write speeds you'll see nice performance gains!

Patriot Memory 120GB Inferno Solid State Drive

Patriot Memory 120GB Inferno Solid State Drive

Compared to about 18 months ago, solid state drives have come down roughly $100 USD making them more affordable. They’re still one of the best upgrades out there. If your current system has been dragging its feet, an SSD is an easy way to speed it up. However, it can get confusing trying to figure out which ones offer the best value and performance as prices depend upon things like the controller and the capacity. Today, we’re looking at the Patriot Memory Inferno 120GB SSD which uses the SandForce SF-1222 controller, which is the fastest controller for consumer SSDs. Let’s have  look and see if that’s true.

OCZ promises 60,000 IOPS at up to 550 MB/s transfer speeds with the Vertex 3 SSD, and Benchmark Reviews confirms that they're keeping this promise with tests of the new storage device on a B3-stepping Sandy Bridge platform against the Crucial RealSSD C400.

Synology Disk Station DS411J NAS

Synology Disk Station DS411J NAS

While we’ve reviewed a few media hubs and media pc equivalents recently, this isn’t always what people want. This NAS isn’t for the faint of heart; the DS411J is packed full of multi-tasking ability. Media server, FTP, torrents, internet radio, iTunes and more.
